The Event Horizon Telescopes captures the polarised light, a signature of magnetic fields, at the edge of M87’s Supermassive Black Hole.
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, which released the first image of a black hole in 2019 and of which the LMT is a member, has unveiled a new view of the massive object residing at the center of the galaxy M87: how does it look in polyrized light? This is the first time that astronomers have been able to measure polarization, which is a signature of magnetic fields, near the edge of a black hole. These observations are crucial to explain how the M87 galaxy, at 55 million light years from us, can produce energetic jets of material ejected from its nucleus.
