September 5th, 2019: the EHT has been awarded the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics

On September 5th, 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) international collaboration, in which the LMT is a member, was awarded the “2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics”. This prize is funded by a group of entrepreneurs and philanthropists and bestowed in three categories: Fundamental Physics, Life Sciences, and Mathematics. It recognizes of the advances that have changed human thinking through great discoveries. The EHT received this prize for “watching the invisible” and producing the first ever image of a super-massive black hole. This was accomplished thanks to the collaboration between 8 radio-telescopes (including the LMT), 20 countries, 60 institutions, and hundreds of people working as an international team with the same purpose: discovering what a black hole looks like.
