During the next two months, the LMT together with the EHT will produce the first “movie” showing the variability of the plasma moving around the supermassive black hole of the M87 galaxy.

March 9, 2026 – The LMT joins the EHT in new observing campaign

The LMT and the EHT have started a two-month monitoring campaign of the supermassive black hole in the center of the M87 galaxy. During the next couple months, the EHT will conduct periodic observations, every few days, of the M87 center to study the variability of the plasma surrounding the supermassive black hole, and providing insights into the formation of relativistic jets.
