The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration, in collaboration with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), has conducted test observations achieving the highest-resolution ever obtained from the surface of the Earth, by detecting light from the centers of distant galaxies at a frequency of around 345 GHz, equivalent to a wavelength of 0.87mm. Due to lack of the necessary instrumentation at this shorter wavelength, the LMT was unable to participate in these initial groundbreaking EHT observations. However, on-going engineering projects including upgrades to the quality of the 50-meter diameter primary reflector of the telescope, and the development of a new VLBI receiver by our partner at UMass, will soon allow the LMT to also participate in future higher-resolution submillimeter (0.87mm) observations with the EHT.
